Four years ago, the merit system was introduced and STPM as well as matriculation students were merged as one into a master list where the students with the best results were taken into enrolment in the respective courses. Under this system, the students have to indicate eight choices in order of preference in their application forms. However, it does not mean that the course chosen by them will be applicable for them even though they have good results. Thus, they will have to indicate in their application whether they would accept a course given to them outside of their choice of eight.

The CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) point was taken into consideration. In cases where the students’ CGPAs were tied, their individual component papers would be considered and if this was still tied, then the student’s extra-curricular activities were taken into consideration. If in the most unlikely scenario that this was also tied, then the students SPM grades would be considered as part of the selection process.

For example, if you list medicine as five of your eight choices, then you may be offered other courses if your CGPA or papers did not meet the cut-off point. Under this system, the students were put onto a single list and not separated according to races.
